Matthew Ball

I specialise in providing financial due diligence to corporates, private equity investors, acquisition entrepreneurs, and banks. I also assist with other aspects of transactions such as advising on deal completion mechanics and the accounting elements of transaction agreements.

In addition to transaction advisory work, I regularly advise on business and share valuations for a range of purposes, including strategic planning, financial reporting, tax planning and shareholder matters. I also act as an expert in contentious situations, such as shareholder and matrimonial disputes.

I provide a wide range of advice across a variety of sectors but have a consistent approach to building trust and close relationships with clients. I work with individuals and business owners who are making significant life decisions, and I am always mindful of the importance of my advice in achieving a successful outcome for them. Ultimately, supporting clients to achieve their goals and helping resolve the matters they need assistance with is the most enjoyable part of my work.

I spent the early part of my career working in internal audit at two top ten accounting firms, before taking the opportunity to undertake a six month secondment working in forensic accounting. Those six months turned into nearly seven years and during that time I predominantly specialised in the quantification of losses and valuations. I always had a keen interest in, and enjoyed M&A related projects, which led me to make an internal move into transaction services. I then joined Gerald Edelman’s Corporate Finance team in 2023.

What is the most exciting thing on your bucket list?

I am a massive sports fan and I have been fortunate enough to attend some high profile events, but I would love to tick off the list the FIFA World Cup final, an Ashes test in Australia and the Ryder Cup.

What one piece of advice would you give your 10-year-old self?

Take up golf, immediately! I would like to think if I had started playing at the age of 10 I would not be absolutely awful now.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?

Whilst it might be a boring answer, a meal with all of my family and friends.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

The ability to stop time. Most people who grew up in the ‘90s will remember the CITV classic, Bernard’s watch. The watch was wasted on Bernard though. I’d put it to much better use!
